Vuvuzelas welcome at Wembley

fa to allow use at community shield

The FA have confirmed that there are no plans to ban vuvuzelas from Wembley, despite a raft of Premier League clubs having this week forbidden fans from bringing the instruments to their grounds.

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City are prominent among the top-flight and Championship clubs who do not want to see, or hear, the instrument's distinctive droning wail this season.

But Premier League new boys Blackpool, in contrast, are encouraging fans to take vuvuzelas to Bloomfield Road.

And fans attending the Community Shield fixture between Chelsea and Manchester United on August 8 will also be allowed to take vuvuzelas to Wembley Stadium, although the FA's stance could be reviewed depending on reaction after the game.

Tottenham became the first English Premier League club to ban vuvuzelas from its stadium. with Arsenal soon following its north London rival to ban the South African trumpets, which were a constant feature at the World Cup — frequently drowning out stadium announcements and television commentary.

"Following discussions with the police and representatives from the local licensing authorities, the club will not be permitting vuvuzelas or similar instruments into White Hart Lane on match days," Tottenham said. "We are concerned that the presence of the instruments within the stadium pose unnecessary risks to public safety."

The Premier League has not ruled on the use of the vuvuzela and its distinctive drone, leaving the decision to individual clubs. So far no west London football club has imposed a ban on the trumpets.
